There She Blows!

Welcome to the Summerland NSW Newsletter 15 May 2012

There She Blows

whale-breaching

Humpbacks are on their way along the Summerland Coast

I spotted three humpbacks on their journey north yesterday off Lennox Head. This is great news and with the weather fine they are relatively easy to spot. Yesterday I tweeted and facebooked the sightings and combined had a reach of over 115 000 potential visitors to our region. Also noticed lots of cars turn up at the headland soon after the tweet and post so perhaps we are also keeping locals advised of the migration.

If you spot any whales please let Summerland know so we can pass on.

Hits vs Visits

When it comes to website statistics you often hear the terms 'hits and visits' but what exactly do these mean and how do they benefit you?

What exactly is a 'Hit'?

Each page on a website is made up of a number of files and images: put basically, a hit is the number of files and images requested for the page to fully load.

Therefore, one page visit does not equal one hit as most web pages are made up of a number of images and other files which stack up the number of hits counted.

hits

So do not be fooled by any smooth talking salesmen talking up the number of 'hits' to a site, what you really want to know if how many visits the website receives and what the average number of page views is - this is what will really indicate your chance for making sales.

What is a 'Visit'?

A "Visit" is one individual visitor, who arrives at your website and then proceeds to browse. A "Unique visit" is someone who is visiting the website for the first time.

So the total number of 'visits' informs you how much traffic the website is actually receiving.

Let's take a look at Summerland NSW for example:

This year alone Summerland NSW has received 1,725,980 hits this is because our website is content rich, full of images, videos, loads of information and interactive content.

This is made up from an outstanding total of 39,658 visits and 346,795 page views a total average of 8-9 page views each visit.

Since our launch in mid 2011, Summerland NSW has received an impressive total of 100,361 visits with a total of 1,167,481 page visits and just in case you were wanting to compare - the number of hits received is 4,989,597.

So I hope this article provides a bit of insight on how to monitor your own website traffic as well as what to consider when advertising online.

Did you know you can see the number of visits your Summerland NSW profile has received by logging in and clicking on 'My Account Details' - where it says 'site visits' this is the number of visits your profile alone has received.

This is a great way for you to monitor the success of your advertisement.

Remember for optimal results keep the content on your website and online profiles fresh and up-to-date and include a range of images to really showcase what your business has on offer.

Rejuvenating Food

Consuming nuts has many health benefits unless you are unfortunate to have intolerances to one variety or all types of nuts. Nuts for most people however, are a wonderful source of vitamins and minerals, natural oils and a great source of protein.

More recent research has shown that eating nuts can lower cholesterol levels and even reduce the chances of coronary heart disease. The omega-fats that are in walnuts for instance may protect you against irregular rhythms of the heart.

Nuts are wonderfully nutritious as long as you can avoid the trap of eating the heavily salted or salted and fried varieties. According to one well regarded source, as little as two ounces of nuts per week is all that is required to lower the heart disease risk.

Ballina Players Presents Chicago

Chicago will Razzle Dazzle 'em

Chicago, the show of shows, will soon be dazzling Ballina Players audiences.

From its opening in 1975, through revival productions and an award-winning 2002 film adaptation, Chicago: a Musical Vaudeville has been a long-running hit world-wide.

Set in Prohibition era Chicago, the story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and on the concept of the celebrity criminal.Central characters are the merry murderesses, Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly.

Famous stage performer Velma (Natalie Havilah) murdered both her husband and her sister when she found them in bed together.

Ambitious and conniving chorus girl Roxie (Lali Gill) murdered her lover and convinced her husband that the victim was a burglar.

chicago1

Roxie and Velma are beautiful headline hunters who hope to gain acquittal and stage careers, so they take every advantage of the corrupt jail system. With the help of the seriously suave celebrity lawyer, Billy Flynn (Mike Sheehan) they achieve the limelight but find that fame does not last.

Roxie and Velma's stories run parallel to the spectacular vaudeville stage show with its powerful song and dance numbers and one liners which have the audience roaring with laughter. The lead actresses bring to their roles considerable experience in musical theatre.

Lali is a veteran of a number of Players youth musicals, as well as Joseph and also Dusty, in which she played Mary O'Brien.  A newcomer to Ballina Players, Natalie is a graduate of the Australian Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Eora Centre and performed for many years in Sydney and with the Lismore Theatre Company.

Chicago, directed by Sue and Paul Belsham, will be staged at the Players Theatre from June 15 to July 7, with evening performances at 8 pm and Sunday matinees at 2pm.

There will be a 2pm matinee on Saturday July 7

Tickets are available at Just Funkin Music, phone 6686 2440.

Opening night on Friday 15th March is a black tie event, with catering, champagne and a chance to meet the cast after the show.

Yes we were there and even remember!

Last Saturday marked 39 years since the world-renowned Aquarius Festival was held in Nimbin.

Up to 10,000 people were attracted to the ten-day festival which celebrated alternative thinking and sustainable lifestyles.

Although Nimbin was the site for the Aquarius Festival in 1973, Paul Joseph suggests that 'the 40th anniversary should be celebrated across the Rainbow Region, as there was nothing central about the original festival. Leading up to it, a dialogue could start amongst us asking what the values and spirit of our communities are and let's together make the spirit of the Aquarius Festival real in our lives. If the dialogue starts now, the outcomes could be many and varied crossing the region.'

Answer for last week's location.

Not in My Garden nor it seems elsewhere...

It appears that no one knew where this gnome was, which is a shame as I have forgotten the exact location myself. It is located on the right of a narrow watercourse along Wilson Creek Road. To the best of my recollection it is located here.

We live in a wonderful part of the world.

Summerland NSW is a haven compared to so many densely populated places in the world that often suffer from toxic overload, uncontrolled noise pollution and environmental devastation.

lake

Yet people can develop no matter where they live, either a happy or sad disposition. There are those who seem to take on a positive outlook on life wherever they are and things seem to nearly always turn out well. On the opposite camp are those whose consistently negative outlook impacts in ways that make things rarely work well. Most of us however, generally tend to fluctuate somewhere between both with our emotions and feelings tending to dictate our moods, our attitudes and the ultimate outcomes.

Winter Whales Byron Ocean Classic Swim

Unfortunately the Winter Whales Byron Ocean Classic Swim had to be cancelled on the weekend due to the water conditions deteriorating off the full moon tide (that super moon again), so much so that there were waves breaking all over the place and the finishing line was a mess.

byron-swim-classic

Byron Surf Club, which provides lifesavers for the event, made the call with the full support of the organising committee.

However some swimmers jumped in anyway and set off from Wategos but began to get into trouble as they headed north toward Little Wategos.

Some of the swimmers who made it around the headland were rescued in waters off The Pass.

Rubber duckies and jet-skis were deployed to pluck those who were struggling from the water and ferry them to shore while hundreds of people watched on.

Reports on the number of people rescued varied greatly.

The main swim event has now been rescheduled for June 3.

To coincide with World Environment Day

tree-planting

The 10th Lennox Head Community Tree-Planting Day will once again be hosted by GeoLINK and Ballina Shire Council, with assistance from local community groups, on Friday, 1 June 2012 (from 9 am to 12 pm).

The growth of the sections planted over the last nine years has been amazing, and there are now thick and well-established tracts of littoral rainforest along either side of the walking track, a tribute to all those people who have taken part in the previous tree-plantings.

We warmly invite all members of the community to come along to the top of the Lennox headland on the day, any time between 9 am and 12 noon, to help to plant some trees.

This is a wonderful way to create a lasting legacy for generations to come.  It's also a lot of fun (not hard work!), and there are 'door' prizes and a fabulous BBQ at the end, courtesy of local organisations and businesses, when everyone can stand back and admire their handiwork.  Please wear closed-in shoes, sunscreen and a hat, and bring gardening gloves and / or spades if you have them.

This 10th anniversary of the Community Tree-Planting day is also a great time to consider sponsoring a tree - this provides a unique way to contribute, especially for those individuals and businesses who cannot attend on the day.

The team at GeoLINK is once again inviting the Lennox business community to help support this initiative.  For more information, please contact Catherine Cheyne at GeoLINK on 6687 7666 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

New Italy Anniversary Day

April 7 marked the 131st anniversary of the rescue of 50 Italian families who, after a horrific ordeal at sea, settled the region known as New Italy, south of Woodburn at the New Italy Museum.

Three generations later, the descendants of these families are still tied together and humbled by their extraordinary story.

Each year they celebrate the survival, tenacity and eventual prosperity of their Italian ancestors.

new-italy

"Our New Italy Anniversary Day (April 15) was a celebration of this rescue of our ancestors, and their survival", explained Mr Barnes.

After 12 months working in the colony, they were given the opportunity to buy a plot land near Lismore that had been rejected by other settlers.

"Through sheer tenacity and hard work they made the sterile land productive and built a school, a church, a wine shop and small industry," Mr Barnes said.

Ship Terminal for Gold coast?

The two-storey terminal would be joined to the mainland by two piers anchored to the Seaway wall. Note: Not to scale

Newly elected Gold Coast Mayor, Tom Tate says he will ignore years of political sabotage and delays with an audacious bid to build a $30 million cruise ship terminal at The Spit in his first term.

Mr Tate unveiled plans to build the terminal by 2014 with the financial support of the Queensland Premier Campbell Newman.

Mr Tate said the two-storey terminal would allow cruise ships to re-stock with Gold Coast produce, adding extra value to the economic boost to tourism.

Vegetarian: To Be or Not To Be

People often decide to become vegetarians without really considering proper dietary needs. Why in fact become a vegetarian? There are reasons for and against and ultimately it is a choice and one that should be at least considered as an option. There are those born into families that are vegetarian for cultural, religious, health or other reasons and equally, those from meat eating generations who have not known any other diet. To complicate the matter, there are also different kinds of vegetarian diets. Ultimately it may be even be a spiritual perspective that one personally needs to address in today's world.

If we look at types of vegetarianism, there are

ovo-vegetarians, (Don't eat meat but eat eggs)
pescatarians (don't eat meat but eat fish)
lacto-vegetarians, (Don't eat meat but have dairy products)
lacto-ovo-vegetarians (don't eat meat or fish but have eggs and dairy)
semi-vegetarians (don't eat meat when it suits)
vegans (no meat, dairy, fish or eggs) and perhaps other variants.

Some good reasons for becoming a vegetarian are: -

  1. Non-violence: there are thousands upon thousands of animals killed for food consumption in our world every minute. Many of them suffer sometimes dreadfully.

  2. Health: most of the meat that services people in western countries is also often from animals that are fed hormones. Animal foods are higher in saturated fats. Plants do not contain cholesterol. Meat eating has been linked with many diseases as it is slow to digest.

  3. Environmental: many rainforests have been destroyed for grazing cattle and the burning of forests to allow for more grazing, contributes greatly to green-house gases.

  4. Compassion: through the destruction of rainforests, roughly 1,000 species a year become extinct. Huge amounts of grain, soybeans, and corn that is produced to feed animals could instead be feeding starving human beings.

ONLINE SECURITY:
Is The Message Getting Through?

Significant time and resources have been invested into public awareness of online threats and keeping their PCs safe. It may therefore come as a surprise that the most prevalent piece of malware (malicious software) still encountered by security experts is over three years old. This is despite a Microsoft patch having been available for over three years.

Why is this the case?

For a software patch to work, it needs to be downloaded onto the PC. Clearly users are not protecting themselves as well as they/we thought we were.

This does not mean people are negligent or apathetic towards their PC security, or that Internet security software does not work. More accurately it reflects the increased sophistication and stealth of both malware and the ways in which the criminals deliver it. Though spam and phishing emails will still contain infected attachments and links, public awareness to avoid these has been relatively successful.
