About Yamba

Yamba is situated on the mouth of the Clarence River it is the only major Port in the whole of the Summerland NSW region still operating as a shipping port.

Yamba Port exports cargo regularly to Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and New Zealand. With an 18 metre high lighthouse, pristine beaches, a large deep-water marina, a myriad of waterways and surrounding national parks. Yamba has plenty to offer the visitor and holiday maker.

Yamba’s original inhabitants were the Yaegl and Bundjalung people, the traditional custodians of this land. “Yumbah” in Aboriginal dialect is a word for shellfish. In the March 2009 edition of 'The 100 Best Towns in Australia' of Australian Travellers Magazine, Yamba was voted the number one town.

How to get to Yamba

Yamba is about a one hour drive from Grafton and about one and a half hours drive from Ballina airport or Coffs Harbour.

The flight to Ballina from Sydney is also only an hour and a half. Hire cars are available from Ballina Airport and Coffs Harbour Airport.

You can also catch the XPT to Grafton from Sydney and buses operate daily from Grafton to Yamba.

What to do in Yamba

Explore the natural beauty of Yamba, stroll along an uncrowded beach, go swimming, fishing, play golf or surf. This charming coastal village has much to offer the holiday maker and visitor.

The Yamba Museum is noted for its extensive collection of well over 2,000 photographs on display. Each picture is fully captioned and sections are broken into significant timelines. Find about Mathew Flinders voyage and his landing on the southern headland of Yamba in 1799.

Beaches: Yamba boasts eleven beaches within the 2464 postcode.

Other Facilities: The town has a relaxed lifestyle with to two pubs and two clubs, The Pacific Hotel and Yamba Shores Tavern a Golf Club and a Bowling club all with regular live performances. There are cafes with internet facilities, restaurants and other eateries. The town has a cinema, library, bowling greens, churches and swimming pools.

Angourie is a smaller coastal village just south of Yamba and home to one of Australia’s most famous surfing beaches. Situated on the northern tip of the Yuraygir National Park, Angourie is well known for the Blue and Green Pools, a former rock quarry filled by a natural spring.

Maclean is promoted as 'Australia's first Scottish town' in recognition of its Scottish settlers. Many of the street signs are in both Gaelic and English. There are panoramic views from Maclean Lookout and fascinating rock formations and caves at nearby Pinnacle Rock. Sailing and water-skiing are popular activities around Maclean.

Woombah is 30 minutes north- west of from Yamba and features a coffee plantation and coffee shop.

Iluka is a 50 minute drive from Yamba, 20 minutes by ferry. You can enjoy seafood at the wharf and watch the early morning trawlers come in with the night’s catch. A World Heritage Rainforest, art gallery, whale watching platform and break wall. Visit the small villages of Palmers Island, Chatsworth Island and Ashby.
