About Mullumbimby

Mullumbimby

Like most of the land in the Summerland region of the Far North Coast of NSW, it was originally occupied by native peoples and the Dur-ung-bil native people lived peacefully in this region.

In the 1850’s it was established as a British campsite and Mullumbimby retains its Aboriginal name for this area.

Mullumbimby is situated on the junction of the three arms of the Brunswick River about 4 kilometres west of the Pacific Highway and only about a 15-20 minute drive to or from Byron Bay.

It is close to Ocean Shores, Brunswick Heads and Billinudgel. Mullum, as the locals refer to their town, has a lay-back feel to it with plenty of shady picnic areas in parks along the river and flat areas of town that make is an easy option for getting around on Bicycles.

The town is set out on a grid pattern that encompasses Byron Shire Council building and a range of shops and services including small eateries, pubs and a historical museum.

Mullumbimby

In the seventies the town had an attraction for counter culture and alternative living style seekers and much of this remains akin with the rural community that sustained a history in dairy and sugarcane farming.

Today nature based tourism is a thriving enterprise with Macadamia Plantations and farm forestry.

The Chincogan Festival is held each September when the streets are closed for parades and market stalls.

The festival involves a foot- race to the top of Mount Chincogan, a conical shaped mountain that is located northwest of the town and forms part of a large shield volcano, Mount Warning which erupted thousands of years ago.
